TEST: Qcove Jim's Break-A-Way Flashers
Info: Qcove Fishing Tackle
Ave. Retail: $9.99-$11.99
Wild Country Rating:
The concept of a breakaway flasher isn't completely new, but it's fresh enough that old-schoolers are typically a little gunshy about making the switchover from their tried-and-true attractors.
Qcove Fishing Tackle is slowly but surely breaking down that resistance with the performance of their Jim's Break-A-Way Flasher.
Fight the fish, not the flasher: The overriding concept of a breakaway flasher is dead-simple: when the fish bites, it releases the flasher from the line, and allows you to fight the fish without the deadening resistance of 11 inches of flat plastic dragging through the water.
The execution of that concept, though, isn't quite that easy.
Flasher for flashers' sake: The tricked-out release mechanism of the Jim's Break-A-Way wouldn't mean a thing if the flasher didn't behave like a flasher should. The geometry of the body is classic and straightforward, with slight angles at the head and tail that supply the basic, exagerrated circular"whump, whump, whump" hydrodynamics of your favorite old-school flashers.
The flash provided by Qcove's mylar finishes - which range from basic scale/plaid/glow/sparkle patterns to a unique UV-injected "Dragon Series - are top-of-the-category, too, and the overall mix of colors and combinations in both plain and UV include every chartreuse, red, purple, white, etc. available in the old-school flasher bag.
The release: The release mechanism in the Jim's Break-A-Way is the key to the whole concept, and it's well thought out. Other breakaways use a small plastic pin that's inserted into the tail of the flasher at a 90-degree "T", which requires a slight sideways pressure to trigger it.
The Jim's Break-A-Way trigger mechanism utilizes a pin that's inserted straight into the tail-end of the flasher, which requires only straight backward resistance to trip. When a fish hits and pulls the line back (which happens regardless of whether the fish turns and runs, or just slows the flasher down because of resistance), it causes the bumper bead to push down against the pin, popping it free and sending the flasher up the mainline on a swivel.
Almost impossible to explain in words, but you can check out the diagram here for a little visual aid.
