Christmas House Store
CHRISTMAS CRASH:
Christmas House = the true meaning of Christmas

POSTED Dec. 10, 2009 / 5:10 a.m.

Down on the third floor of the Clear Channel building in Seattle - one floor below the studio where we broadcast Northwest Wild Country - the unofficial nickname for the Christmas Crash is "The Night of Giving". When we started this whole event back in 2004, we just wanted an excuse to give away some really cool stuff - to share the gift of swag, as it were.

Joel Blog MugUp at the Everett Boys and Girls Club, though, the spirit of sharing and giving carries through the entire season. It has for 29 years.

Christmas House is a non-profit, 100-percent volunteer organiztion that provides toys and essentials to low-income families for the holidays. In 2008, over 9,900 infants, youths and teens received clothing, blankets and toys during the Christmas House Season, and 2009 will almost certainly exceed that number.

Wild Country is proud to be part of the Christmas House spirit.

For every item gathered for our Dec. 23 Giveaway CrashTacular, the Wild Country crew is asking all participating factories to donate one additional item to be added to the Christmas House Store Needs List.

8PLEASE CLICK HERE to see the Christmas House donations page, and a detailed list of items needed to supplement the Christmas House Store Needs List.

2009 Christmas Crash Hot List

JETBOIL Helios
NEW Dec. 5, 2009 / 4:30 p.m

Jetboil Helios

High performance meets high capacity in the new Jetboil Helios Cooking System. The Jetboil has been a Christmas Crash favorite since we first tested the product back in 2005, but the Helios offers higher capacity for a truly all-in-one portable cooking system.

We put the Helios through the Crash treatment this summer. The result: It made our Christmas Hot List about 10 seconds after we fired it up for the first time.

CRKT Big Eddy II Fillet Knife
NEW Dec. 5, 2009 / 4:30 p.m
CRKT Big Eddy II
Columbia River Knife & Tool Company's Big Eddy II Fillet Knife is the product of necessity: Alaskan guide Russ Kommer, one of CRKT's lead knife designers, needed a knife specifically designed to fillet big Chinook, and, voila, along came the Big Eddy II.

The Big Eddy II's razor-sharp 9-inch stainless-steel blade features a hollow grind on the top side, which "floats" the flesh off the skin, Triple-Point serrations for cutting cartilege and bone, and Kraton-grip handle. This is a seriously badass fillet blade, and a Christmas-gift winner.

COSTA DEL MAR Zane
NEW Dec. 5, 2009 / 4:30 p.m

Costa Del Mar Zane
As I write this, I can see two pairs of well-used Costa Del Mar sunglasses within my reach. Suffice it to say, Costa has been near the top of the Christmas Crash list since we started this whole thing back in 2004.

Check out the Zane, which won the 2009 ICAST "Best of Show" award for Best New Eyewear: co-molded Hydrolite temples and nose piece for secure fit, frame vents to prevent fogging, and, of course, Costa's famous polarized optics in whatever color and shade suits your individual fishing application best.

More Crash Hot List
8 Skeet Reese Signature Series
No, yellow is NOT the color of Christmas. However, it's certainly the signature color of 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion Skeet Reese, who teamed with Wright & McGill to design 9 new bass rods that you'll see on retail racks throughout the country in 2010.

8 Exped Dry Bags
You may not be able to pry these out of my hands for the Dec. 23 Crash Giveaway Special. They're that good. Exped's fold dry bags are made of durable, pliable PU-coated Tafetta nylon, with 10,000-mm water column and taped seams. They come in every size you'd ever need, and we've thoroughly tested them. My digital camera says "Thank you, Exped!".

8 Wiley X Jake
Wiley X has been providing eyewear for the military for years, so if you're looking for better overall protection for your eyes than the Wiley X Jake, you won't find it. Part of Wiley's Climate Control Series, the Jake features the company's trademarked Facial Cavity Seal for advanced protection from the elements, and proprietary Filter 8 polarization for unequalied clarity and contrast.

8QCove Jim's Break-A-Way Flasher
The Christmas gift that arrives just in time for winter blackmouth season, Q-Cove's Jim's Break-A-Way Flasher features a smartly designed breakaway system that allows the flasher to pop loose from its connection to your bait/hardware when a fish is hooked. Great colors, exceptional action and flash, and part of an overall great line of products from a local company.

8 Garlic Gourmay Spices
Best stocking-stuffer in the world, period. We first met Paul Kuper - the head Gourmay down at Garlic Gourmay - at Cabela's Fish Camp about 5 years ago, and have been giant fans of his product ever since. Gourmay produces the highest-quality spices in the country, including a Garlic Mesquite Rub that finds its way into just about every dish on our table.

8 Midland Radio GXT Mossy Oak
A 34-mile range, 42 channels, over 140 privacy codes, NOAA Weather Scan, X-TRA TALK power and dozens of additional bells and whistles make the Midland GXT in Mossy Oak a powerful tool for you hunters. This isn't your dad's old walkie-talkie!

8 Ex Officio Give N Go Skivvies

NWWC's "The Eyes Have It" Contest
NWWC CONTEST: Win Wiley X sunglasses, more in "Eyes Have It" Contest!
POSTED Oct. 30, 2009 / 9:10 a.m.

I remember a Halloween party from my childhood where all the little ghouls and goblins were asked to reach into a series of covered bucket and feel around to identify what was inside. One of those buckets was full of eyes. Well, they were actually grapes, but, I THOUGHT they were eyes.

Joel Blog MugThe day before All Hallows Eve seems like a great time to roll out the latest in the Northwest Wild Country Contest Series. We're proud to present NWWC's "The Eyes Have It" Contest, sponsored by Wiley X.

The Contest: Simply identify the 12 species of fish above, using only their eyes as your clue. Look easy?

Ha! Give it a try. And BE PRECISE: There are several different classes of the rainbow & salmon species in this contest, so tell me E-X-A-C-T-L-Y what those species are.

The Payoff: Your selection of fine eyewear from Wiley X, high-velocity eye protection designed for fishermen. Contest entrants who correctly identify all 12 species of fish will be in the final running for a choice of the Jake and AirRage (part of the Wiley Climate Control Series), or the P-17 (part of the Active Series).

8CLICK HERE to enter at Gamefishin.com, and be sure to tune in to Northwest Wild Country on Saturdays as we drop a couple of hints about "The Eyes".

WILD WIRE FLASH: Steelhead Show brings 'em out to Viking Marine
NEW Nov. 17, 2008 / 7:30 p.m.

Vedder at VikingMARYSVILLE, Wash. - It's becoming very apparent that the Northwest Wild Country family is ready for the 2008-09 steelhead season to kick off.

I'd like to extend a hearty thanks to the Wild Country listeners who came out to Viking Marine last Saturday for the rockin', ribald Steelhead Show, a daylong celebration of the Evergreen State's official state fish.

It's always good to spend some quality time with the NWWC family, but it's even better when you're surrounded by high-powered seminar speakers, kickass fishing gear, top-of-the-line jet sleds and several steelhead-crazy friends.

Timing was just right, too. With rivers dropping back into shape this week and fresh winter-runs already being caught in the Skykomish, Cowlitz and various other western Washington streams, it's time to get serious about metalheads.

Tune in this Saturday as the Wild Country crew takes a drift through the best early-season steelhead options in the Pacific Northwest, with live, on-the-water reports from the best guides in the region. Check back for the official show preview on The Show page on Thursday.
